Pigeon population in Leuven declines by 57%

Promising first results: in just over one and a half years, the pigeon population at four feeding sites has been more than halved

In the summer of 2019, the city of Leuven sounded the alarm. There were too many city pigeons and they were causing a nuisance, especially at the station. The city was looking for an animal-friendly solution and turned to Vets For City Pigeons. The city then installed feed dispensers at four locations in the city centre: in the vicinity of the station, the Sluispark, Museum M/Ladeuzeplein and the Vriezenhof.

Today, one and a half years and a series of monitoring missions later, a 57% decrease is observed at these locations. At the feeding location near the station, the population has even decreased by 69%. The city of Leuven is pleased with these results.

In September 2020, the city added a fifth feeding location to their monitoring policy: the Cera building in the historical city centre. We expect positive results here as well. With these 5 locations, the main populations in the city centre are covered.
