Kortrijk is the second West-Flemish city to tackle pigeon nuisance with birth control

The reasons why the city of Kortrijk chooses birth control with Vets For City Pigeons are diverse. Pigeon droppings are a threat to public health and cause serious damage to infrastructure and buildings, which means extra maintenance for the city services. In addition, there are too many pigeons for current techniques to control and feed the population on a daily basis. And when pigeons find their nesting place on or next to houses, residents often have to deal with unpleasant surprises and nuisance.

Kortrijk will start feeding R-12 in mid-March, with a first evaluation by the end of 2021. The city will introduce this method for a period of 4 years. After this period, the population will have been reduced by 60 to 80%.

The city is starting with 2 feeding sites that are popular with the city pigeons: on the IJzerkaai near the skatebowl and on Rollegemplaats. Here, automatic dispensers are placed that distribute R-12 at fixed times. After one year, a decision will be made about possible extra feeding locations.
